SOUTH AMERICAN ENVIRONMENT RISK NETWORK

ABOUT THE PROJECT

SAVERNET

SAVER-Net Project is a management system on atmospheric environmental risks through the monitoring of the state of aerosol , ozone layer and UV radiation measured on the observation sites and almost at real time and made available from the Centro de Investigaciones de Láseres y Aplicaciones (CEILAP) (Center of Laser Research and Applications)and Laboratorio de Investigaciones Atmosféricas de la Universidad de Magallanes ( Laboratory of Atmospheric Investigations of the Magallanes University) to relevant ministries and agencies.

SATREPS

SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) in which Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) are partners and provide assistance to Japanese researchers as well as to those from developing countries to solve issues of global character, such as climatic change, energy, the control of infectious diseases and natural disasters.

BACKGROUND

In April 2013 , the governments of Argentina, Chile and Japan signed an agreement to implement a project to investigate aerosols from different origins, such as volcanic ashes that have a high impact on natural resources, agricultural produce , air navigation and the different ecosystems. The objective of the present project is to establish an atmospheric monitoring system from earth surface of this region to cover the existing gap in the coverage of the global monitoring system so that the 3 main atmospheric risks, such as aerosols, ultraviolet radiation and the ozone hole can be monitored and evaluated

EXPECTED RESULTS

An aerosol monitoring net with a near to real time answer will be developed. The principal properties of aerosols focused on the areas of origin, type of aerosols, transport and seasonal variations are estimated. The present observation systems of the ozone layer and UV radiation (millimeter- wave radiometer equipment, ozone LIDAR and associated instruments) will be updated. The variations of the ozone layer hole and the process of mixture- dilution of in the ozone depleted air due to the ozone hole at median latitudes of the south American region are analyzed. An integrated analysing system of atmospheric environmental risks will be developed. A system that has as an objective the exchange of the data analyzed during the development of the Project with the relevant ministries and agencies will be developed and evaluated.
